Thirst N' Howl

Welcome to my blog about eating out, cooking at home, running, and the other stuff in life.

I have been eating all my life, but only started really cooking my own food about 7 years ago.  (I could make a good box of mac and cheese.)    I always loved eating out and trying new foods wherever I went.  Since moving to Little Rock I have been trying out all the local places and hope to post reviews on most.  This town is full of restaurant turnover, so I am hoping this blog gets the word out when the food is great.  I am also training for my first marathon in March.  I run so I can eat, and eat so I can run.

Today I ran 16 hilly, long, cold miles.  So my family and I went out for lunch at a new to us place.

Thirst N' Howl Bar and Grill on Cantrell Rd., Little Rock AR

I must say first that the place was close to empty, but perhaps they don't advertise they are open for lunch on Saturdays.  With two kids in tow, that's not such a bad thing for me.  We met the owner and she was very nice.  The first thing we noticed was the coolest bar made out of wine bottle bottoms cut off and cemented in, then back lit.  They used antique doors for the frame.  There is a Jimmy Buffet theme to the place and they usually show Gilligan's Island reruns all week.  There is also a stage set for bands to come play on the weekends with no cover charge.

The food:

Potato Skins - not your average, nice with hamburger and shredded cheese, side of ranch
Burgers are all 1/2 lb and both were cooked just to well done, nice and juicy.
Volcano Burger with Pepper Jack Cheese - well seasoned and Spicy
Skipper Burger with American cheese - seasoned and tasty
Fish and Chips - breaded (looks like done in house) and fried, crispy and good
Seasoned Fries were good, but a little greasier than my taste.
House Made Potato Chips were thin and crispy, well seasoned.  I will get these next time!

While there we were offered a sample of the House Made Tamales.  They were delicious!  Served with a side of House Made Chili, the chili is seasoned well, but more of a southwest style than I prefer.

Overall, I think the food tasted well, was prepared well, and the service was great!  The prices were average for the meal so no sticker shock at the end.  I know this is going on my list of favorites.  There were other items like crab cakes on the menu I want to try!

Today I give it 10K status, good enough to run to and stay a while.
